Define Tool – A summary of the activity

This activity allows you to define a maintenance tool, which can be an instrument required for executing a maintenance task.  Anything from a small measuring instrument such as micrometer to a big piece of equipment as crane can be modeled as a tool. The tool may or may not be an item defined in the inventory. Some more examples of tools are vise-grips, oxyacetylene torch, electric hand drill, hydraulic floor jack, digital multimeter and pneumatic impact wrench.

You can define the tool with a unique code and provide a description, user-defined tool type and status for it. The number of tools that are required along with the usage cost per hour of the tool can also be provided. If the tool is identified as an item in the inventory, the item code and the variant code can also be provided.

You are also provided with the option of assigning a unique serial number to each identifiable unit of a tool. The serial number should be unique to the tool code.

Note: If you specify the serial number for individual tools under a tool code, ensure that you specify the serial number for every identifiable unit of the tool inducted into the system under that tool code. Once created, the serial numbers defined for the tool cannot be deleted.
