RCCP is the process of converting the master production schedule into capacity needs for key resources: work force, machinery, warehouse space, suppliers’ capabilities. Bills-of-resources is used to accomplish this. Comparison of capacity required of items in the MPS to available capacity is usually done for each key resource.  RCCP assists the master scheduler in establishing a feasible master schedule. Rough Cut Capacity planning get s the master production schedule for the item/planning group by period. It then identify the product structure and the bill of resources for the item code/planning group and calculates total resource requirements for each period. In this page, you can view the capacity availability and the capacity requirements on critical resources for the selected planning group/item. The resources used for planning are identified from the bill of resources. Bill of resources specifies the required capacity on critical resources to produce the unit of the selected item.

The capacity requirement is carried for the resources that are are constrained (bottlenecks), experience turbulent requirements, involve high-cost resources and are underutilized . For example, if there are five resources (R1, R2, R3, R4, R5). If the resource R3 is inefficient then the resources R1 & R2 though in the completion stage will be affected as the item has to pass on the resource R3. Even the resources R4 & R5 cannot complete the work until the work is released from the resource R3. In such cases, those critical/bottleneck resources have to be planned earlier. So, rough capacity planning on the resources is done either by grouping all the resources or for the individual critical resource Apart from the critical resources, you can also plan for the aggregate resources. Master scheduler can compare the available capacity with total resource requirements at each resource(work center) for each period. After comparison the master scheduler can adjust load, capacity or both and regenerate the master production schedule. You can specify the planning group or the item and the resource attached to either of them. The range of dates can be specified and the period between this range displays the MPS periods as defined in the Master Production Schedule page. For example, if the from and to dates are specified as “01/01/03” and “31/12/03” respectively, then the system populates the periods in the multiline within the MPS periods. The corresponding resource details are displayed in the multiline. Further you can also view the maximum, available, required and the load factor details for the specific resource. The MPS quantity is compared with the available productive quantity and finally the quantity planned is released to the MRP.
